How long do breast implants last in Ann Arbor?

That’s really a difficult question to answer because there are many factors that will affect the longevity of a breast implant.

In your case, you may be experiencing some problems with your implant that need to be addressed such as the cause of the rash and “air pockets”.

If you had your implants done 14 years ago they are most likely saline implants and the “pockets” may represent riplling or a possible deflation.

You should see a plastic surgeon and have your situation evaluated including having mammagrams, ultrasound and possibly an MRI.

If the implant is leaking or if the implant shell has disrupted the implant should come out and be exchanged.

Generally, saline implants last 10 years or more but can leak under some circumstances. The newer silicone gel implants with cohesive gel are more durable and less likely to leak.

Implants have different lifespans

There is no set time that an Implant will last without rupturing. However, here is what I have observed after 23 years of experience: Silicone Implants last longer than Saline Implants.

I have seen women with intact Silicone Implants after 25 years. Saline I’ve seen last as long as 17 years. Smooth Surfaced Implants last longer than Textured Surface Implants.

With regards to Implant Replacement, I have 2 suggestions: Leave the Implants alone and only replace them if they rupture or deflate. If one should rupture close to the end of your warranty period (usually 10 years), I would suggest you replace both and begin another warranty period for both Implants. Breast implants replaced when needed

Breast implants in Ann Arbor are designed to be left in for a lifetime. With that said they all have an approximately 1%/year rate of rupture. And studies have indicated that a majority of women who undergo breast augmentation in Ann Arbor will need another surgery within 25 years. Now that doesn’t mean necessarily due to rupture. Replacement of Breast Implants and How long Breast Implants Last

When to replace breast implants is a very complex topic. There are a number of reasons to replace implants. They include:

Rupture
Capsular Contracture
Rippling
Size Change
Changing between silicone and saline

There is no recommended interval at which you must change your implants. We always advise our patients that breast implants are not lifetime devices and therefore you should expect to replace them at least once in your life.

For Mentor Saline implants in Ann Arbor the rupture rate is 1.8% per year and for Mentor Silicone implants the rupture rate is 1% at 6 years. If a rupture is found then replacement of both implants in indicated.

Please note: both Allergan and Mentor have a warranty replacement program in the event of rupture. In our practice in Richmond, Virginia we have seen patients with both saline and silicone who have gone for over 20 years without issues. How to choose breast implant size

Breast implants come in many different sizes and more importantly different shapes. A certified experienced plastic surgeon will suggest the best size and shape for your unique anatomy and desires.

There are implant sizers to help you make your decision. I usually suggest my patients take a section of panty hose and fill it with rice to make a soft filler for your bra.

A 300cc implant would be equal to 10 oz of rice. This is not a perfect fit but will give you an idea. Share your concerns and desires with your surgeon and your new contour will be just perfect. (Andrew Goldberg, MD, Fairfax Plastic Surgeon)

Best is to pick implant sizes based on your breast and chest width and not the volume. When the width of the implant fits the width of your chest, it will look nice and fit your frame.

Choosing a size for a breast augmentation in Ann Arbor can be confusing. More important than the size of the implants is what you want to look like after the surgery.

Sometimes patients have a volume in mind that doesn’t match the look they want to achieve. In theory,the best way to help with determining your implant size would be if you could “see” yourself with implants in Ann Arbor. Although computer simulations and 3-D are useful, they are only pictures.

I have found that the breast implant external sizing system (by Mentor) is a more personal method for patients. It allows you to place specially designed implant shapes over your breasts. (This is not the same as simply putting an implant in your bra.)

Finding the correct implant size can be so stressful for my patients. There are so many different opinions offered by my colleagues; that doesn’t make it any easier. There are two trains of thought:

Use anatomical measurements to determine the absolute best or proportional implant size for the patient
Give the patient what she wants

Arguments could be made to support both ways of thinking. I think some patients don’t have a lot of confidence or don’t know exactly what they want. They respond well to doctors with confident opinions about what is the “right implant” for them. Doctors that follow train of thought 1 are best suited for these patients. I think some patients are very sure of what they want cannot tolerate doctors dictating what size is best for them.

They will either be talked into the “best implant” and be dissatisfied with the result or find the doctor that will comply with their wishes. Choosing the right size implant in Ann Arbor

I have tried the rice test, implants in an unpadded bra, pre and post op photos as well as computer imaging. These all work to varying degrees.

I have found that the using the “Mentor” sizing system in the office with an unpadded bra and a tight white T shirt gives me the most reproducible results and the most content patients.
