Can the back side of a veener be ground down? If so, does this ruin the durability of the veneer?

Adjusting the back of a veneer is usually done for the purpose of adjusting the bite, so that it can actually increase stability and the longevity of the veneer. It is something that is commonly done and does not diminish the durability of the veneer.

Resin bonds to dentin the same way ceramic veneers do – not very well. So there is no benefit of adding composite resin into the mix. Get the graft and then the veneers. If you really want to skip the graft, then on the 6 lower teeth, get ceramic crowns that cover the recession, instead of veneers.

It usually takes around 6-8 months for a “dead tooth” to manifest into an abscess. Possibly the nerves of the teeth were dead prior to the veneers being done. However, if braces are absolutely not an option, then this can be fixed rather quickly by opening the bite. Ideally composite veneers should last at least a few years without showing wear. However if you are a smoker or heavy coffee/wine drinker, they can stain rapidly. If your bite is not in ideal alignment, you can damage them rapidly through grinding.
