How long do breast implants last

Breast implants are not permanent devices, they are long-term devices. They are expected to last about 10 years, but if you are not having any problems, you don’t necessarily have to do anything.

Breast implant surgery can be done day-only

Breast implant surgery is normally performed as a day-only procedure – whether the patient is having a full general anaesthetic or some sort of twilight sedation. Every plastic surgeon does things slightly differently, so it’s important to understand from your PS why they would want you to stay in overnight.

In my practice, all implant surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic on an outpatient (day-only) basis. I use lots of local anaesthetic, so the patients wake up pain-free and go home with tablet pain-killers.

I normally see them the day after their surgery to make sure everything is ok.

Saline can look & feel very natural!

Saline and silicone implants both have pro’s and con’s. (One thing that may be viewed as a “con” by one patient is a “pro” to another, such as being able to immediately know of rupture in the case of saline implants due to noticeable breast deflation.)

Saline implants have a slightly higher rupture rate, *can* look and feel less natural and are more likely to show a rippling appearance than silicone. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t patients that have wonderfully natural looking saline augmentations! One thing I can reassure you is the safety of both types of implants.
When placed under the muscle, you are going to have the best result with either. I would do some more reading, look at as many outcomes as you can and also review the warranties from the companies that make the implants you are considering.

I’ve provided some info in my link below and on that site there are more links to the FDA’s site and implant manufacturers.

Breast implants vs. Fat Grafting

Fat grafts are loaded with stem cells, whether you specially process the fat or not. In fact, fat tissue contains larger volumes of stem cells than the traditional source — bone marrow. Fat grafting to the breast was abandoned, when breast implants became available because the results were better.

Breast implants were safer and more effective. Fat grafting cannot add the same volume that an implant can. Fat grafting can lead to calcium deposits in the breast, making mammography difficult to read, so the grafts should not be placed deep in the breast tissue, only superficially, making nodules more easily palpable.
Interesting work is being done in the field of stem cell/fat grafting, but it is by no means mainstream or accepted as a reasonable alternative to breast implants in 2011. Breast implants are the most investigated medical device know to man, so it is unlikely that any new problems will be found with them.

While breast implants are not perfect, but they are the best thing we have available. When I started my practice in 1997, fat grafting to the breast was one of the few procedures specifically excluded from my malpracatice policy.

Those performing the procedure should check this for their patients sake. Though we didn’t know it in the 90’s, the stems cells were already in our fat grafts. Many of the problems with the original fat grafting are not likely to be solved by adding more stems cells.
More research is necessary. Additionally, while the problems with breast implants are know, the long term results of artificially increasing the number of stem cells in the graft are unknown.

Augmentation Mastopexy

It looks like you would benefit form an augmentation mastopexy (implants and lift). You have deflation of your breasts and need the added volume from implants. You also have ptosis and asymmetry of your breasts which can be improved with a mastopexy.

I prefer silicone implants since they have a more natural feel.

In the best results, breast implants feel completely natural.

1) What a fascinating range of opinions. We have seen patients go to a new gynecologist, have their breasts examined, and be told: ” Normal breasts” (the doctor could not tell there were implants in the breasts). But those are the best results. There are no guarantees in surgery, and you need to try to find a good surgeon.
2) You will get the most natural results with round, smooth walled, moderate PLUS profile or high profile silicone gel breast implants.

Long-term results from breast asymmetry correction

In general, long-term correction of breast asymmetry holds up very well. As the other replies mention, there will never be a perfect match but it should be a lot better. The thing that might affect it the most over the long run would be weight gain, since the larger breast has more fat in it to begin with, simply because there is more breast there.

So weight gain will affect that breast more than the smaller one which would be mostly implant.

Your results are great for only 2 weeks post op. So many factors cause different rates of healing between sides. That’s why it takes months to really determine the final result. Capsular contracture will not occur this soon out so the small asymmetries are due to swelling and muscle tone at this stage.

Selecting implants

Your breasts appear small but normally shaped, and as you have pointed out there is a difference in the size and the position of the crease under the breasts. In general, for a smaller-breasted person a 450cc would make a substantial difference in the final breast size.

However, a proper assessment, including measurement of your breast dimensions, would be needed in order to give detailed recommendations about implant selection.

Implant size

It is possible for someone who is petite to have implants in the 400cc range. Full evaluation by a board certified plastic surgeon is your first step. I have attached a photo demonstrating 425cc implants on a petite woman as well.

Augmentation mastopexy

Based off of these photos, an augmentation mastopexy (or lift with implant) seems necessary. I do not think a shaped implant, or very large implant, will give you the desired shape. With significant ptosis, or droop, It becomes picking the best of two imperfect worlds: more scar and better shape Vs less scar and worse shape.
Make sure to see an ABPS board certified plastic surgeon for a full consultation – history and physical.

Breast cancer and breast implants – Should I get breast implants with a family history

Breast implants will not impart a greater risk of breast cancer. However, once you perform the breast implantation, you should be remain vigilant with breast cancer screening.

Also, you may consider genetic testing if you are very concerned about breast cancer.

What Type of Implant Will Make my Breasts Look/Feel More Natural?

For the person with not much breast tissue, and I think you fall into that category, a silicone gel implant will certainly feel more natural, and depending on the size of implant, will likely look more natural.

Dr Stanley Okoro Is A Double Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Saline implants tend to project their feel and shape much more readily through your breast tissue, hence they feel and often look less natural. Because U. S. surgeons for almost 25 years were only able to use saline implants for cosmetic breast augmentation, we became accustomed to the look of saline implants, which can look overly round and unnaturally full in the upper pole.

Gel implants overall tend to have a softer and more natural appearance. For the individual with very little breast tissue, one of the new generation of tear drop shaped implants will provide the most natural appearance.

In this patient group with minimal breast tissue, even a softer round gel implant can still look somewhat round. In part it is a matter of personal preference and some women prefer the slightly rounded appearance of the upper pole that a round implant tends to create, and again would be most evident in someone with little breast tissue.

When there is more breast tissue covering the implant the difference would be more subtle. All shaped implants have a textured surface so that they adhere to your tissues and hence prevent them rotating which would of course not look right.

Dr Stanley Okoro Plastic Surgery

Creating the implant pocket for this type of implant must done carefully so that implant fits snugly within the pocket. When done properly the incidence of implant rotation is vanishing small. I have never had a patient develop implant rotation in my practice and the latest study from Sientra with thousands of patients showed a zero incidence of rotation.

To imply that shaped implants have a significant incidence of rotation and result in a deformed breast shape is simply wrong. Also, it has been commonly recognized for years, and several large studies have demonstrated that textured surface implants have a lower rate of capsular contracture, particularly if they are placed in the sub glandular (on top of muscle) position.

If implants are placed in the sub muscular (under the muscle), then the incidence of capsular contracture is about the same for smooth and textured surface implants. There are no well done studies or other data to support the claim that textured surface implants have a higher rate of capsular contracture.
Change in Size after breast Augmentation?

Great result at this point. If your concern is that they will get larger over time, then not a problem. Swelling will resolve, the upper pole will drop as will the implants in general. You will not get any larger.

The 60cc differential is not noticeable in the post op photos you have provided, you look quite symmetric. Sit back, relax, and don’t fret as you seem to be faring very well just 5 days post-op !

Implants huge

You are very new in the surgical post op period. The muscle is pushing the implants upwardly and the muscles need to relax to allow the implants to drop. This will take place but wait for at least 3 months to make a judgement because the implants will come down and the swelling will decrease.
Be patient and discuss this with your doctor.
