Breast Augmentation & Breast Cancer

Studies have actually shown that women with breast implants statistically have a lower rate of developing breast cancer, but it is important to be sure that you receive regular mammograms and perform self exams to check for breast cancer.

When scheduling you mammogram, be sure to tell them that you have breast implants as the procedures are different. If performed as a regular mammogram, the implant can obstruct detection by 15%-50% (depending on the technique used to perform the surgery), but by utilizing advanced mammogram techniques for women with breast implants, readings can be improved by 92%.

Breast augmentation patients also need 4 views of the breasts, rather than 2 with a basic mammogram. By utilizing special detection techniques and by having breast augmentation under the muscle, doctors can see a larger portion of the breast and are able to perform a more effective mammogram.

Breast Feeding

Breast implants can be placed directly under your muscle or under you breasts and this surgery will not affect your milk ducts or nursing.

Breast Feeding Can Be Done after Implants

You can breast feed after undergoing an augmentation mammaplasty. You do need to bear in mind that your breasts will be very large with the implants and the engourgement of milk and that this may result in significant sagging after you finish breast feeding, but otherwise there should be major problems.

Plus sized women and implants

If you are healthy, there is no reason that you cannot get breast implants. It is important to discusse realistic expectations with your board certified plastic surgeon. Your breasts can be made fuller with breast implants, but with a few caveats.
When we are selecting implants with a patient, we typically try to balance the chest with the hips. Even if your hips are full, I typically recommend for my patients to not go larger than a full C to small D.

That is the breast size when patients may start to have problems with back and shoulder pain due to the weight of their breasts. Also, when patients are plus sized, they do not see as much of a change in the shape of their breasts with an implant.

When you are meeting with your surgeon ask to see photos of patients with a similar frame so that you can better understand what is reasonable to expect.

Dual plane is reasonable.

the bigger the breast, the lower the nipple. So, your nipples may be in the right place if your breasts were bigger! Don’t go subglandular. A little hang is good, but an implant that big on you would sag!! You can always add a lift later if needed.
Breast augmentation options

Saline implants will add volume and upper pole fullness but will alone not correct the relaxation of your breasts. Your photos suggest that it would require a breast lift to result in a cosmetically pleasing breast.

A consultation and exam would be your next step.

Breast feeding after breast augmentation. Is it safe?

Breast milk is the perfect food for a new born. Unfortunately, not every woman is able to breast feed even without breast surgery. There are no guarantees after breast augmentation that a woman can breast feed no matter where you place the surgical incision.

In my practice I have several patients who brest fed successfully after their breast augmentations. There are no known studies that I’m aware of that implicate implants in a negative way relating to breast feeding.

One thing you should be aware, that if your wife has an augmentation and then becomes pregnant, afterwards there might be some mismatch between the implant and the breast tissue.

To lift or not to lift

Optimally, you should have the lift, assuming that finances aren’t an issue–but they usually are! The potential need for the lift is perhaps more evident on the lateral view with respect to the right breast than frontally.

What you have to decide is what is important to you. If having larger breasts which sit lower on the chest than would be typical is not troubling, then you can have the augment first and assess – but understand that gravity will have its effect.

Making these decisions is never easy for women. Create a plus and minus chart and see whether that is of any benefit in coming to a conclusion.

Natural Look for Uneven Breasts – Type of Surgery?

Your Plastic Surgeon must evaluate your size and shape discrepancies and then decide upon differential implant sizes and styles in order to make you breasts appear augmented but more natural. This is done at your consultation where you can try on different sized implants and then decide the look that you are trying to achieve.

Providing only ht/wt info is not adequate to determine implant size. A full exam and consult will allow an experienced plastic surgeon to help you select the correct implant size and style. Most women are in your position.

They do not want to end up too small.

There is definitely a lot of swelling in the breasts right after surgery. Honestly, it can take about 6 months for all your swelling to go down.

The majority of swelling reduces in the first month following surgery. Your implants will drop and settle into the pockets and they will become much softer looking and to the touch. With your height and weight this seems like you went with a good size for your body.

Sometimes patients at first are just not used to seeing themselves with large breasts so at first it seems like you had gone too big. After a while you will get used to your size as well.

Dr Turowski

I am not sure what size breasts you had started with but I think you will end up being very happy.

Secondary surgery usually hurts less

The fact that you have had your implants removed and are now having them replaced may throw a monkey wrench into this however. The question is how tight are your tissues and will they stretch with the implants quickly.

Is there any scar in there? What does your surgeon say? I would say it will still likely hurt less unless you are having much larger implants placed.

Implant profile

Your tissue looks rather thin so I hope you are prepared to feel the ripples in the saline implant and, quite possibly, see them thru the skin. High profile silicone gel implants provide a good volume/diameter ratio and give wonderfully natural results.
The so-called health risks of gel implants are horribly exaggerated so don’t let fear deter you from the most natural looking/feeling breast
