How Do I Minimize Bruising from a Rhinoplasty?
How Do I Minimize Bruising from a Rhinoplasty?
Jan 14, 2019
There are several factors that affect bruising following rhinoplasty.  Two factors that are uncontrollable are how easily your body bruises in general and the maneuvers the surgeon performed during the rhinoplasty.  For instance, moving the nasal bones tends to cause more bruising around the lower eyelids than a tip only rhinoplasty.
To minimize bruising, there a few things you can do to help.  This starts preoperatively by avoiding any substances that could increase bleeding during s...
Is my nose damaged or fractured ?
Is my nose damaged or fractured ? (Photo)
Jan 14, 2019
Following trauma to the nose, the signs of a broken nose include immediate bleeding, swelling, bruising around the eyes, tenderness to palpation, deviation of the nose to one side when it was previously straight, or collapse of the nasal bridge when severe.  Symptoms may include difficulty breathing.  Not all of these signs and symptoms may be present, but when it is not immediately obvious and they persist beyond the first few days, a broken nose should definitely be suspected.
A broken...
What is a Non Surgical Nose Job
What is a Non Surgical Nose Job
Jan 14, 2019
In certain patients that have a hump and a low radix (valley between the eyes) and small tip, a non-surgical (liquid) rhinoplasty can be performed.  That involves placement of filler above and below the hump in those low points to camouflage the hump so that the hump does not look as prominent.  This can make the nose look more attractive in those patients, but it does not make the nose smaller.  In fact, it actually makes the nose bigger because you are adding substance to the nose rather ...
Removing Nose Bump Without Breaking the Nose?
Removing Nose Bump Without Breaking the Nose?
Jan 14, 2019
Removal of a nasal hump is a very common component of a rhinoplasty.  Sometimes this involves moving the nasal bones inward to make the nose narrower to achieve a more ideal shape, but not always.  People often use the term "breaking" the nasal bones, but this is not an accurate representation of what is performed surgically.  "Breaking" sounds like a gruesome, uncontrolled move that scares patients.  In surgery, the nasal bones are moved inward with precisely controlled bone cuts using an i...
How Soon After Rhinoplasty Can I Fly or Exercise?
How Soon After Rhinoplasty Can I Fly or Exercise?
Jan 14, 2019
I typically advise my patients that they can return to exercising, flying on an airplane, and resuming sexual activity after their nasal splint is removed at 1 week after rhinoplasty.  After splint removal, you are well on your way to a smooth recovery.  At that point, the most important factor in your healing is avoiding any trauma to your nose.  These are general guidelines, as every surgeon has different preferences, so I recommend discussing with your surgeon regarding his/her specif...
Crooked Nose or Uneven Swelling After Rhinoplasty?
Crooked Nose or Uneven Swelling After Rhinoplasty?
Jan 14, 2019
Following immediate removal of your nasal splint at 1 week postop, you are still very early in your recovery.  There will typically be a tremendous amount of swelling that makes it difficult to see the surgical results.  Your nasal skin and soft tissues will still have the memory of the old shape.  It will take time for the skin and soft tissue to shrink around the new underlying cartilage/bone structure created during surgery as the swelling goes down.  The swelling will resolve in a step-...
When Did Swelling Go Down After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery?
When Did Swelling Go Down After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Jan 14, 2019
The nasal splint after rhinoplasty is molded to the shape of your nose, so it produces compression of the soft tissues.  That is why your nose looked great immediately after the splint was removed.  Once the splint has been off for a day or two, the lack of compression causes the nose to swell.  This can make your nose look large or have the remnant of a hump, but it is important to understand that it is the effect of swelling and not permanent.  At only 2 weeks postop, you are still very ea...
Does "Nose Up" Work?
Does "Nose Up" Work?
Jan 14, 2019
Devices worn on the nose are not effective in achieving shape change of the nose.  They are a gimmick.  If they were effective, there would be no reason for patients to ever get a rhinoplasty.  When there is an anatomic abnormality of the nose, only surgery can change the shape of the cartilage to produce a long-lasting result.  Non-surgical (liquid) rhinoplasty is a procedure in which filler is added to the nose to temporarily change the outer appearance of the nose that can be consid...
How can I find the best rhinoplasty surgeon?
How can I find the best rhinoplasty surgeon?
Jan 14, 2019
As with all surgeries, picking the right surgeon for you is a very important decision that includes many factors.  In regard to rhinoplasty, I would recommend consulting with a surgeon that performs a high volume of nasal surgery.  Look for someone that specializes in rhinoplasty.  One of the best ways to find someone like that is to ask if he/she did an aesthetic fellowship after his/her plastic surgery training dedicated to complex rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction.  Make sure the pe...
What's Most Attractive in a Male Nose?
What's Most Attractive in a Male Nose?
Jan 13, 2019
Approach to the male nose is certainly different than the female nose.  Certain characteristics are considered masculine that you would want to preserve in a male rhinoplasty without feminizing the nose.  For instance, a slightly scooped or lower bridge is considered attractive in some women, but you would not want to have that in a man.  Similarly, a slightly elevated tip is considered attractive in both genders, but the angle between the nasal tip and upper lip should be 90 - 95 degrees in...
Tip Rhinoplasty: What Is It?
Tip Rhinoplasty: What Is It?
Jan 13, 2019
The nose can be thought of in terms of thirds.  The upper third contains the nasal bones, the middle third contains the cartilage of the bridge and septum, and the lower third involves the cartilage of the tip.  A full rhinoplasty would involve surgical correction of all of three thirds of the nose.  A tip rhinoplasty would involve surgical correction of the lower third containing the tip only.  Therefore, a tip rhinoplasty would involve less surgical dissection with an easier and less e...
Non-surgical Nose Job Procedures to Reduce Nose Size?
Non-surgical Nose Job Procedures to Reduce Nose Size?
Jan 13, 2019
Unfortunately, there are not any nonsurgical procedures to make your nose smaller. In fact, it...
Is It Possible That With Age, My Nose Is Growing Larger?
Is It Possible That With Age, My Nose Is Growing Larger?
Jan 13, 2019
As with all other aspects of the face and body, the nose does change with time.  The nose exhibits characteristic changes with age that can be attributed to a lack of support and changes in the skin.  In regard to support, the tip drops and develops a droopy appearance that can make the nose look longer.  This can also make a hump on the bridge appear more prominent.  The nasal skin exhibits changes that include thickening of the skin and sun damage with an aged appearance.  With a rhinoplas...
How To Treat Hole In Nose From Cocaine Use?
How To Treat Hole In Nose From Cocaine Use?
Jan 13, 2019
It sounds like you have what is called a septal perforation.  Repeated cocaine use can cause injury to the septal cartilage that runs down the center of the nose and separates the two nasal passages.  When a perforation (hole) develops in the septum, the two nasal passages become connected.  The severity of the problem determines what the best solution is for each patient.  Smaller perforations that cause symptoms such as bleeding or whistling can be repaired with flaps of nasal mucosa insi...
When to Stop Drinking Alcohol Prior to Surgery?
When to Stop Drinking Alcohol Prior to Surgery?
Jan 13, 2019
Heavy drinking should be avoided the week of surgery, and consumption of all alcoholic beverages must be stopped 24 hours before surgery to avoid dehydration.  Certain alcoholic beverages like red wine are thought to increase bleeding risk, so we recommend discontinuing red wine 1 week before surgery.  However, this a theoretical risk rather than being backed by extensive scientific studies.  These are general recommendations; it is advisable to discuss your surgical instructions with your...
