Former Collegiate Swimmer desiring Breast Augumentation but has questions.
Breast Augmentation for Athletic Bodies
Jul 14, 2017
You can absolutely obtain a beautiful result with a breast augmentation. During your consultation, your surgeon will show you different sized implants and will help you find the right implant to match your breast size and to get you to your goal. The implants are centered directly behind the nipples so the cleavage that is created is determined by your nipple distance and the size of the implants. This should be discussed during your consultation.
When can I start running again after my breast augmentation?
Ease Back Into Activity
Jul 14, 2017
It is too soon to start running comfortably. You are still in the immediate post-op period and still are at risk for bleeding and a hematoma. I would wait at least one week before trying to perform any strenuous activity. I usually tell patients to wait at least 3 weeks before any rigorous activity. Your body will tell you when it is time. If something hurts, don’t do it.
Is it true after a BA you are not allowed to workout your chest muscles?
If It Hurts, Don’t Do It
Jul 14, 2017
That is not true. After a breast augmentation, you can certainly exercise your chest muscles.  However, you should wait to do so until there’s no longer any discomfort with movement. The muscle should be allowed to heal as much as possible before attempting to stress it. Your body will tell you when it is ready. As a general rule, if anything hurts, don’t do it.
What’s worse – movement or lack of movement in the healing process?
Don’t Force Anything
Jul 14, 2017
It is important to give your body as much healing ability as possible. I always tell my patients that if anything hurts during the recovery, then don’t do it. Your body will tell you when everything is fine. If it still hurts to massage the breasts, then don’t do just yet. The muscle and other soft tissues are still healing and do not need to be aggravated by extraneous movements and pressure.
What kind of bra is recommended post surgery when having a breast augmentation?
Bandages and Bras After Breast Augmentation
Jul 14, 2017
I use a compression wrap immediately after the procedure. I place a lot of gauze to give bulk and then apply 2 large, tight bandages and I leave these for the first 24 hours. While it may be uncomfortable for the first night, I have found that the amount of swelling and bruising is minimal and even nonexistent in many cases. I unwrap the bandages after the first day to make sure that there are no immediate issues, such as bleeding. I reapply the bandages and the patient wears those until day…
Am I a good candidate for a Breast Augmentation with NO LIFT???
Augmentation Without Lift May Be Possible
Jul 14, 2017
From the photos, it appears that your nipples are above the inframammary fold. Generally, if the nipples are above the folds, then no lift is needed. If they are below the folds, a lift is usually indicated to get the breasts to the right position before implants can then be placed. Larger implants will also provide a slight lift to the nipple, so if you are on the borderline of needing a lift, a large implant may give you the results you want. There are different types of lifts and they all…
Questions to ask surgeon during consultation?
Get to Know Your Surgeon
Jul 14, 2017
Probably the most important question that can be asked is whether the surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon. All too often, physicians may call themselves board certified, but in reality they are “certified” by a non-recognized “board.” I would also inquire about the location of the surgical suite where the procedure will be performed. If it is being performed outside of a hospital, it is important that it be an accredited facility. Who will be performing the anesthesia? Is it a…
When to go back to work after a breast augmentation?
Take a Week Off
Jul 14, 2017
I always advise that patients plan on taking 1 full week away from their duties at work. That being said, if you have a relatively docile job, such a desk job, then you will be able to return to work within a few days of the procedure. Heavy lifting should be avoided for at least the first week after the procedure. Full gym activities can usually be realized at 3 weeks post-op.
What is the pain like a week after breast augmentation? How long until you can go in wat
Showering OK 2 Days After Surgery
Jul 14, 2017
I allow my patients to fully bathe 48 hours after the procedure. They are allowed to go in the water one week after the procedure but must not be vigorously active. By three weeks most patients have fully returned to their normal activities without any difficulties.
Considering breast augmentation, will this affect my nipple piercings?
Take Rings Out Prior to Surgery
Jul 14, 2017
Nipple piercings should be removed prior to the procedure for sterility and electrocautery issues. They can be replaced after the procedure. If you are considering a piercing after the procedure, I would advise against it. There was an Aesthetic Surgery Journal article published in 2016 that described an implant infection after nipple piercing.
How much weight would I need to loose for breast augmentation?
Weight stability is more important than being a specific weight
Mar 2, 2017
While there is no specific weight recommendation for breast augmentation, it would be best for you to be at your ideal weight, or at least a stable weight.  If your breast size is decreasing with weight loss, it could affect your choice of implant size.  Having fuller breasts as you choose your implants could lead to selecting a smaller implant than you might ultimately want.  If you lose weight afterwards, your implant might not provide the fullness that you desire.
How soon can I workout after breast augmentation?
Workouts Are Usually Safe After 4 Weeks
Mar 2, 2017
I always tell my patients that they should be able to resume all activities by 4 weeks. There should certainly be no issues at 6 weeks after the procedure. I also tell my them that the body will let them know what they can do. In other words, if you feel pain during any activity, then refrain from it. Almost everyone has returned to the gym at 4 weeks with no issues. I would confer with your surgeon and follow his or her recommendations
Ashtanga yoga after a BA, any restrictions?
Listen to Your Body
Mar 2, 2017
Almost all of my patients can resume full activity at six weeks after the procedure, barring any difficulties. I also tell my patients that the body will tell you what you can do. In other words, if any activity causes pain, then refrain from it. I rarely hear that any activity restrictions are needed after 6 weeks, so you should be safe at 8 weeks, but please confirm that with your surgeon.
Breast augmentation with or without lift?
Breast Lift Is Recommended
Mar 2, 2017
It appears from the photos that you will require a breast lift prior to the augmentation. The lift will raise the nipples to the level of the inframammary fold. Skin will be removed as well, and this will give your breasts a perkier appearance. Implants can be added to improve the fullness and roundness of your breasts. While a lift will probably give you a small amount of upper pole fullness from the repositioning of the breast tissue, it is the implant that will really provide the upper…

Start With a Breast Lift
Mar 2, 2017
Since your nipples are below your inframammary folds, you will require a breast lift. The lift will reduce the size of the nipples, remove skin, and raise the nipples to where they should be anatomically – located at the folds. You can then add implants in order to provide more fullness.  The implants will give you the fullness and round appearance that you desire. I always stage the procedures, doing the lift first. You might find that when you have perkier breasts with nipples in the co…
